Here’s another partially complete piece. I carved this entirely with a stainless Frost’s Mora (and a little sanding). I’m not sure what else I want to do with it, but I don’t think it’s finished yet. I’m thinking a the very least thinning it out, making the whole thing concave on the wood side, following the shape of the outside.
For size reference, the leather strap in the photo is 1″ wide.
The iPhone takes some decent photos, but the lighting in here in the middle of the night sucks for taking pictures.
Just to start out, here is something I began working on several years ago. I never finished it because the wood cracked. SUK!
Don’t let the relative size to the axe fool you. That’s a Gransfors Bruks mini hatchet, and it only weighs 12 ounces. The hedgie is only about 1.5″ long from end to end. The coloring of the “quills” is the natural color of the inner bark (or maybe cambium?) of the beech limb I used.
I think the next one I will use beech again, but leave the bark on, and see how that looks. I also want to find a way to keep it from cracking this time around.
In any case, thanks for looking!
